Are you watching what you eat? Trying to stay healthy and choosing the best, fresh and preferably biological products? That’s great! You are doing wonders for your health… Or are you? Because that irritable bowel might not agree with you! Sometimes the healthiest snack or meal can give you an upset gut!
“Why does my bowel protest when I eat healthy foods like fruits and veggies?”
An irritable bowel can react to multiple food groups. I do not mean all fruits or all veggies but certain groups of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates that irritate your bowel can be found in very healthy foods like vegetables and fruits.
One example I can give you is fructose. Fructose is a fruit sugar which is found in apple, mango, artisjok and asparagus. Maybe you do not put sugar in your tea but you prefer honey? To bad, your sweet friend can also trigger your gut, when you are sensitive to fructose.
Off course we can’t live without a variety of fruits and vegetables every day! They are so healthy and recommended to eat on a daily basis. Did you know that if you avoid most fruits and vegetables for a long period of time, it could really effect your health? You could get a deficiency of one or more vitamins and a lack of fiber surely won’t do your bowels any good.
It is very important to figure out which group of carbohydrates you want to avoid! Please do not avoid too much and certainly not too much of the tasty and healthy foods. You might think you feel better but in the long term your body needs you to eat enough and varied.
By starting a elimination diet like the FODMAP low diet, you could figure out which groups of carbohydrates trigger your irritable bowel.
